Below is a simple diagram of the neurons around the brain. The arrows represent the messages that are going in and being sent out after being produced by stimuli. The messages depend of the type of stimuli present. For example seeing, the optic neurons send the messages to enable sight (A. Hall, person communication, July 28, 2009). Brain development occurs at different rates in everyone and it is important to understand that individuals may be more developed than another.
