Teacher’s who observe the theory that their students have the need for self determination, realise that students can be motivated by this and show more interest in learning. Eggen and Kauchak (2009) suggest that people are not content when they have not been given the opportunity to contribute to their needs, even when the outcome is positive. This means they want to make decisions and have a say. With students, allowing them to make decisions and solve problems will help them develop in their psychological needs of competence, autonomy and relatedness (Eggen & Kauchak, 2009).
